How to Best Position Your New Original Oil Painting or Limited Edition Art Print

There’s a quiet kind of joy in finding a piece of art that speaks to you — something that stirs a memory, an emotion, or simply makes your heart lift when you see it. Whether you’ve just invested in an original oil painting or a limited edition print, where and how you position it in your home matters. Art isn’t just decoration; it’s food for the soul. And like anything precious, it deserves the right setting.

Here are some guidelines to help you showcase your new piece in the best possible light:

1. Let the Art Breathe

Give your painting or print enough space to shine. Avoid overly cluttered walls, and allow the work to command attention. A bare stretch of wall above a mantelpiece, bed, or console table is often perfect.

2. Eye-Level is Ideal

As a general rule, the centre of the artwork should be at eye level (around 145–155 cm from the floor). This draws the viewer in naturally, without straining up or looking down. Of course, rules can be broken — especially for gallery walls or if you're making a statement — but it’s a good place to start.

3. Lighting is Everything

Natural light can bring out the texture and depth of an oil painting, while soft ambient lighting helps prints glow. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can fade colours over time. If you want to highlight a piece, consider adding a spotlight or picture light to really make it pop in the evenings.

4. Think About Mood

Where you place art can shift the atmosphere of a room. A calming seascape might suit a bedroom or hallway; a bold abstract could add drama to a living room or entryway. Don’t be afraid to move your art around until it feels right — let your instincts guide you.

5. Consider the Frame

All of my original oil paintings come professionally framed — each one specifically chosen by the artist to suit the character and colours of the individual painting. Limited edition prints can be purchased mounted or mounted and framed, depending on your space and budget. A good frame doesn’t just contain the art — it complements and elevates it. Choose one that works with your interior, but never outshines the work itself.

6. Tell Your Story

Art becomes even more special when it connects to your story. Maybe the piece reminds you of a place you’ve visited, a dream you hold dear, or a feeling you needed to express. Give it pride of place in a room that means something to you — somewhere you’ll pass it every day and smile.

7. Trust Your Eye

There are no hard rules when it comes to placing art in your home. You don’t need to be an interior designer to know when something feels right. The most important thing is that you love it, and that it lifts your spirits whenever you look at it.

Whether you’re hanging a one-of-a-kind oil painting or one of my carefully crafted limited edition prints, remember: you're not just filling a wall. You’re making a space more yours — more beautiful, more soulful, more alive.
