Colourful Kinsale houses climb a wooded hill beneath a full moon, with yachts crowded in the harbour below. Oil on canvas, rich in texture and Irish character.
A full moon hangs over the hill and the whole town seems to have tucked in for the night. Houses climb the slope in yellow, red, slate grey and white, stacked up against dark green woodland that’s been worked thick with the knife. It’s the Kinsale you know from the postcards, only quieter, with the tourists gone home and the lights coming on.
Down at the water, the yacht basin is packed with white hulls sitting close together, their reflections broken up in the deep blue below. There’s a little glow on one of the boats near the front, which is a nice touch if you look closely.
It’s oil, layered up heavily in the foliage and smoother in the sky, and the moonlight is soft enough to let the colour of the buildings do the work. A painting for anyone who has ever walked down to the harbour after dinner and stayed longer than planned.
